Royal Mausoleum


Establishing a royal cemetery in lower Nuuanu was the vision of Kamehameha IV back in 1860. The mausoleum, according to an on-site plaque, was completed in 1865. Mauna Ala, as the site is called, is said to have been the battleground of King Kamehameha I's Oahu invasion.

Among the planting are plumeria, lau hala, a sausage tree, and of course, ti leaf and royal palms.

Like 'Iolani Palace, only the Hawaiian flag flies on the site.
