First Chinese Church of Christ

This church was founded by thirty-six Christian Chinese immigrants in 1879. Their original church was on Fort Street Downtown. They held a design competition for their new church building, which Hart Wood won, and this building was dedicated in 1929 on their fiftieth anniversary. The interior layout is the same as the First Church of Christ Scientist on Punahou that Wood also designed (according to source below), but the exterior has distinctive Chinese architectural elements like the perhaps pagoda-inspired bell tower and tiled entry. The grilles near the entry are similar in shape and style to those on the Gump Building in Waikiki, but these have cross shapes in their center. They offer service in both English and Chinese.
